Balinese Cemetery’s Laws
Cemetery is very important aspect in Balinese society. It is the integral part of Balinese social cycle of life. If you are a Balinese and are having problem with local cemetery rules, you are in a very very big trouble. You can not use the local cemetery and can not bury the dead body. In Balinese society there is no such public cemetery that you can use freely to bury the dead body of your family.
Known as banjar, it is the smallest Balinese social community. Every Balinese who live in Bali belongs to a certain banjar. Every banjar has its own cemetery plus its special temple known as Pura Dalem. Only the member of the respective banjar can use the cemetary. So if you belong to Banjar A, you can not use the cemetary that belong to Banjar B. It is a taboo and prohibited by the banjar laws known as awig-awig.
The problem arises when most of the banjar communities in Bali apply such a strict rule/punishment to the banjar member in case they break certain local laws (adat), that is they can not use the cemetery. So why bothers? As mentioned in the above paragraph, Balinese people can not use cemetery other that the one in their banjar. Not being able to use a cemetery will result in a serious problem for Balinese as they must use it as the part of the cremation ceremony. There is no solution yet regarding this problems. Many believe that this punishment against the human rights as it is something to do with the very basic of human need: religion which is a personal relationship between man and God. However, some banjar keep this punishment in effect.
I simply would say that this punishment is too arrogant. Couple weeks ago I read in a paper that some Balinese people violently destroyed a cremation ceremony of banjar member who considered were not liable to use the local cemetery. It is an irony indeed. Balinese people don’t have any goddess spirit anymore, only anarchy.
hmmm…maybe be the effect of global warming ? lol kekkekkekk
I agree with some of the idea. This is a culture problem Bro! And to change a society culture is not a small change! What Balinese need is an adaptation to modern world, and this could happen with a good education system (which we don’t have yet). Btw, about the last sentence I think you should update it. Because I think not all Balinese have lost their goddess spirit.
CMIIW!
Nice post bro!
@dian, LOL i dont think so, maybe the impact of dollar-warming
hehehe, meaning that it is not that easy anymore to get those dollars from tourists especially from those who are repeaters
@suryawan, yeah the education system which mainly focused on the moral things rather than those old fashioned curriculum
hahah you are right not all Balinese have lost their goddess spirit, at least : not yet
@,it’s not problem with our culture,it’s problem with the rules b’cause people againts that rules so they’r not allowed to used the ceme(kubur)which’s we named in Bali b’cause we reused it, when the ceme is full we do cremation (ngaben)so ceme(kubur) be come empty and people died we burried there again.if others than bali traditions they’re call cemetary(kuburan)b’cause they used only one time, and when the cemetary full they relocated to another places,if in the westren they are have to buy the places where they want to burried, other they want to in public cemetary or they want in private land, that is your choise b’4 you died,b’cause if in the public cemetary there are somebody to takecare of it,cleaning, cuting the grass,or they want to side the roads so they can wacth the people passby they can wiped they’re hand to the driver or motorist,,,hahaheheeheheh in western they have rules also like veteran or goverments services they burried in goverment cemetaries.so in Bali we just find it only one seme(kubur)eachs banjar adat, but in western you can found it in alongs side the roads,or many places so they call cemeteries or alots of seme,,hihihihihihiiiikikk
this is what you get if the religion and the local customs are tightly blend in together. you can’t distinguish which one is the religion and the customs…
@suryawan,,baliness culture been blended long-long time ago since VOC till become srombotan,,,,xixixiiiikikiiiik
we just need more changes the attitudes human moral,,,
