Balinese Table Manner
I find a huge difference in regards to the table manner of western people and Balinese, especially in term of one specific thing : talking while dining. As we know that dinner or lunch time, for westerners, is some kind of daily ‘ceremony’ or ‘ritual’ which has important role in their social life. There is a preparation, what to wear, what to eat, where to eat and the most obvious part is they talk a lot during dining time. Seriously I mean a lot of talking. No wonders they can spend hours for dining. Not good for their waiters in the restaurant. Heheheh. Why do western people talk a lot during dining time? I am not sure but it is obviously as the part of their life style. My guess is as follow, they are way too busy during the work hours so dining time is the most possible way for them to socialize each other.
Unlike western people, Balinese people have the opposite way of table manner. It is a very very very taboo for Balinese people to talk while having their meal, no matters it is breakfast, lunch or dinner. Why? There is no obvious reason, however this has become a part of Balinese culture. Since the very beginning, Balinese family would not allow their kids to talk while having their meal (for safety reason?). This silent is gold-table manner now seems to be a human nature for Balinese people. They can eat fast and no need the ritual of appetizer, main course, dessert and so on. All are become one plate, eat it and the most importantly keep silent.
I guess thats why Balinese people are not so good in any job which involve dinner/lunch as part of gaining a deal or something like that. How would they be able to convince the client if they just silent during the lunch?
Pertamax, nice love it…..
wondering how they do their business??
#Chic, thats little bit of irony, there is only a few few Balinese who are on top job in Bali. Let say in tourism which is the main industry in Bali. No matter how smart they are, they would never been in top positions such as GM.
back to your question, they do it the hard way, if you know what I mean
#balibuddy, what’s up bro?

btw, it maybe good idea to inform your clients about this blog hehehe so they know the other side of Bali. Care to put a link of your business site here?

is it habit ??,or my own table manner.
wkwkwkwk
just like javanese, i think, they dont talk during having meal. One of the main resaons is appreciating and concentrating on the food. They believe, only by silent or keep focusing on the taste of each menu, they can enjoy the meal. Eating is eating, dont mix up with other activities…
@ribeka, I think a crocodile has no table manner, aight?
@arya, it is okay as long as you do not talk
@mohammad, ow I was surprised knowing that Javanese have similar habit to bAlinese regarding table manner
