Future Homebase of Green Peace?

Bali has a unique way in preserving the environment as it has been integrally combined in their culture and religious values. Most of Balinese people do not realize that somehow they have been participating in the environment preservation. Then I thought, Bali might be the future home base (branch office) for the Green Peace, an independent global campaigning organisation that acts to change attitudes and behaviour, to protect and conserve the environment and to promote peace. I know it has a home base in Jakarta but why not in Bali? Here are the supporting factors worth consideration:

1. Balinese have a built-in concept of preserving the environment which is part of their religious life called Tri Hita Karana, a Balinese concept of life in gaining the harmony and peace. It consists of three aspects they are Parahyangan (harmony and peace can be gained by establishing a good relationship between human and God), Pawongan (harmony and peace can be gained by establishing a good relationship between human to human), and this is what I am talking about, Palemahan: harmony and peace can only be gained by establishing a relationship between human and the environment. You see, Balinese put a direct concern to the environment issues.

2. Animism Concept. It is a belief that every object has soul or spirit on it. Balinese pretty much believe that tress especially the big ones have spirit on it. Thats why only in Bali you will find trees fully dressed (at least a wrap). Therefore, in special places Balinese are afraid to cut the trees cause they do not want to be in trouble (dealing with those spirits).

3. Tumpek Uduh. This is a special day in which Balinese people pay respect to the environment, especially trees. This special ceremony will treat the trees just like human being, giving them some offerings. It is considered also as a way of thanking them for ‘taking care’ the earth.

  1. pertamax……For balinese preserving environment/nature is a way of life, I hope all the people got this massage !

  2. But on the other side, the policy to build any construction not taller than coconut three will keep our land being transformed into non-agricultural purposes buildings.

All hotels will be resort which cost more land and businessmen will need more shopping centres/malls in different places, because the limited capacity to host their enterprises in a singgle place.

  3. mohammad, the rule is good for Balinese defense in order to avoid Bali being transformed into a metro Bali. in fact, the rule can not be applied 100% depending on the location and ‘underground discussion’ among those parties., Nikko Bali, Bali Beach, to name a few

  4. fully dressed trees LOL kekekkkek….ah I wish all of Indonesian people have Tumpek Uduh sense, so they don’t do illegal logging !

  5. Even, when balinese built a house or other building, still considering “sikut karang”. For example Asta Kosala-Kosali.
Another way is “Subak”, an irigating system, a concrete way to respect with others, with environment, and with God.
