Balinese Law of Karma

April 7, 2008 – 8:18 pm

Karma is one of the main principle of Balinese life which is based on Hinduism called karmapala. The word karma though is well known not only among Balinese but almost everyone in Indonesia seems familiar to it. The word karmapala derived from two words: karma means ‘action’ and pala is a kind of fruit. Literally karmapala means the result of your action however it generally understood that karma is something that you got for what you have done and many times it is understood as a punishment. In English, karma is known as what goes around comes around.

Actually the law of karmapala is not that simple. There three different kind of karmapala based on Hinduism and they are :

1. Sancita Karma. This is a past tense karma. This karma is the result of your action in previous life. This is hard to understand without knowing first the concept of reincarnation in Balinese (which I will post next time). Let say in previous life you were such a bad guy than in today’s life you will accept the karma/punishment. This explain the fact that no matter how good you are in today’s life but why still suffering? Yes because you’re being punish for what you have done in previous life.

2. Prarabda Karma. This is a present karma. Whatever you have done in today’s life you will get the result in today’s life too. Let say you did something bad in the age of 20s, you will have it next time maybe at the age of 30s, 40s etc.

3. Kryamana Karma. This is the future tense karma. You will accept the result of your action in your future life. Let say you did something bad in this life, you are still OK now but in your future life you will suffer from the action.
