Haircut During Pregnancy
April 11, 2008 – 10:00 pmThere is a belief among Balinese husband that it is a taboo to do a haircut during the pregnancy of their wives. Actually that is not a part of Hindu principles, it is only a culture which turn into a rule most Balinese husbands would follow. They believe that something really bad will happen to the baby if they do a haircut. I myself do not have a clear idea what kind of consequence will occur if they break the ‘rule’. So when you see suddenly a Balinese man got a long hair (which he usually does not), you can guess that he is having a pregnant wife.
What is actually the message behind it? I happen to guess that actually it is a hidden trap for the husband in regard to their loyalty toward to his pregnant wife. Here is the logical reason: a pregnant wife is generally considered not psychically beautiful anymore, they are fat etc. So the pregnancy period is actually a chance to put the husband’s loyalty to the test. Having a ‘not beautiful anymore’ wife will cause the husband easily do something that will destroy the marriage such as cheating etc. By not cutting their hair for so long (9 months), the wifes hope that it will make the husband not in good grooming, literally I mean ‘not handsome’ so it will destroy the husband’s confidence to approach another woman. In Balinese mindset (the old school folks), doing a haircut for man is often generalized as getting a better grooming (literally, become handsome).

well, in sundanese or may be in javanese culture also have taboo stuff like that but not hair cut as far as I know, they believe that pregnant woman must hide under the table during lunar eclipse. If not the baby may have dark skin color in some body area .

I think this particular culture is very good idea for moral development especially in the such country that speaks about moral out loud, practise what you preach I guess…. good on you Bali
