Buying Painting in Bali
April 14, 2008 – 7:34 pmBuying painting is one the favorite things visitors do in Bali. There are many places to do so such as art shops, art galleries, art studios and whatever the names are, they are all in one business which is selling paintings. The flourishing of what so called art places have resulted in a difficulty of finding a real genuine Balinese art work. Instead, what you most likely see will be a mass produced art work with same theme and textures.
Usually the mass produced painting have similar theme such as Balinese dance, Balinese masks, Balinese ceremony, Bali rice fields and so on. It is just not cool when you find a similar painting in your neighbor’s house back in your country, for example. Those art work are made of cheap quality of ink and canvas. Here are tips when you plan to buy paintings in Bali:
1. Ubud and Ubud. Where do I start? Ubud area is considered the most trend setter of art world in Bali, from traditional until contemporary art genres. So do not even think twice, go straight to Ubud area which is located some 30 km from Denpasar.
2. Direct Buying. It is always a better idea to visit the artist’s studio directly because of the two main reasons: originality and ‘normal price’. One way or another, you would be able to get the information regarding artist studios in Bali, especially in Ubud.
3. What kind of painting? Decide first what ism of art you want. Is it traditional or contemporary art? It is a rare occasion to find a mixed up artist in Bali. They usually have their own specialties such as naturalism, realism, abstract and so on.
4. Well-established art gallery. In case you can’t do the step 2, always try first the well established art galleries which have a well known good reputation. How the hell do I know? Go to the tourist information center in Ubud, tons of brochures are available and you can always asks the officers there.
