Balinese Suckling Pig Goes International
Balinese suckling pig (locally known as nasi be guling) is one of my favorite foods. Every time I go back to Bali for a vacation, I am always going to my favourite suckling pig food stall which is located in Jalan WR Supratman Denpasar called Gemah Ripah. Also there is one in Ubud area called Warung Ibu Oka located right in front of the village hall (bale banjar). Suckling pig is a young pig that has only fed on its mother’s milk. The piglet is at the ages of two to six weeks and traditionally roasted. It is usually reserved for special occasions (Wiki).
So far, I thought that suckling pig is exclusively Balinese traditional food which can only be found in Bali but I found that suckling pig food can be found internationally. A magazine called Esquire edition October 2007 (page 72) has an insight article on suckling pig entitled ‘Global Glutton Suckling Pig’. The article mentions about restaurants around the world where you can find this special food. To my surprise, Warung Ibu Oka in Ubud Bali, is also listed. Here is the complete list:
1. The Main Square, Valladolid, Mexico
2. Villa9Trois, Montreuil Sous Bois, France
3. St. John, Clerkenwell, England.
4. The Spotted Pig, New York, USA
5. El Celler De Can Roca, Girona, Spain
6. Ibu Oka’s Warung Babi Guling, Ubud,Bali
